Family Marine Volunteering

Key Information

Like all our volunteering projects, the shark conservation centre operates in a unique setting. South Africa has a conservation culture and this marine project is about 1 hour 45 minute drive from Cape Town International Airport.

1) Conscious travellers worldwide are increasingly aware not only of conservation but also of the culture and customs of the people around the reserve and centres. We support this approach wholeheartedly. This conservation model creates opportunities for the adjacent communities, their businesses and cultural initiatives.

2) Your weekly fee covers comfortable shared accommodation, transfers from and to the airport, two meals per day and a visit to the Two Oceans Aquarium with a 14-day stay. Overall, you can expect to be comfortable, and well looked after with friendly and experienced staff. Your fees also include up to 5% donation towards conservation.

About the project

For the Love of the Ocean

Just outside Cape Town, the coastal town of Gansbaai offers families a unique chance to join an award-winning marine conservation project. Perfect for ocean lovers, this experience combines hands-on conservation with unforgettable marine wildlife encounters.

South Africa’s 3,000 km coastline is home to the Marine Big Five – whales, dolphins, seals, penguins, and sharks. From June to November, spot Southern right whales, while Bryde’s and Humpback whales can be seen at other times of the year. The area is also home to three dolphin species, including the endangered humpback dolphin.

As a family, you’ll support real conservation and community initiatives through research and education. Highlights include feeding endangered African penguins, snorkeling in the kelp forest, and exploring beachside caves.

Your stay includes comfortable family-friendly accommodation with a pool and garden. Meals can be enjoyed at the nearby Great White House Restaurant, and the warm, welcoming team ensures you feel right at home.

Volunteer together, connect with nature, and create lifelong memories!

Your Impact

Born to protect the endemic marine ecosystem and threatened species, funds support local marine education and research programmes, fostering long-term, community-driven conservation and eco-tourism. In partnership with CapeNature, the Nest Project and the African Penguin biodiversity management plan have successfully restored most colonies, playing a vital role in protecting this endangered species. The marine project aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 14 Life Below Water, SDG 15 Life on Land, SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth.

United Nations’ Sustainable Goal #14: Life below Water

Marine scientific research undertakes activities in ocean and coastal waters to expand scientific knowledge of the marine environment and its processes. The shark and penguin projects promote the protection of these species.
