Rhino Sanctuary Volunteering & Murchison Falls Safari

Key Information

Welcome to Uganda — a land of breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. Known as the “Pearl of Africa,” Uganda is where lush green hills meet vast savannahs, mountain gorillas roam ancient forests, and a rich cultural spirit thrives in every community.

Nestled in East Africa, Uganda is home to Africa’s largest lake, Lake Victoria, and the source of the mighty Nile River. Its natural beauty and diverse wildlife are unforgettable, but it’s the people who truly make the country shine.

Highlights:

1) Meaningful Wildlife Encounters: Experience close-up interactions with iconic African animals during game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, including hippos, buffalo, elephants, and even tree-climbing lions in Ishasha.

2) Immersive Conservation Role: Actively support wildlife preservation and community well-being through volunteering in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, with opportunities such as gorilla health monitoring, conservation education, community health projects, or livestock care initiatives.

3) Unique Primate Tracking: Embark on an unforgettable gorilla tracking experience in Bwindi, spending an hour with these gentle giants in their natural habitat.

4) Diverse Eco-Exploration: Explore Uganda’s biodiversity with visits to natural landscapes like the botanical gardens near Lake Victoria, Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, and game drives in Lake Mburo National Park.

About the project

Spending a week volunteering at Uganda’s Rhino Sanctuary directly supports crucial conservation efforts aimed at protecting one of Africa’s most endangered species. Your contribution helps fund anti-poaching patrols, habitat restoration, and community education initiatives. Beyond the physical work, your presence raises awareness and adds international support to the sanctuary’s mission, making a lasting impact on the future of rhino conservation. Set in Uganda, the “Pearl of Africa,” this program also gives you the chance to explore breathtaking landscapes, encounter incredible wildlife, and experience the spectacular Murchison Falls, combining meaningful conservation work with unforgettable adventure.

Your Impact

You will play an important role in supporting wildlife conservation and local communities. Your participation helps protect endangered species, promote sustainable use of natural resources, and empower local initiatives.

Contributes to United Nations’ Sustainable Goal #15: Life on Land

This program actively supports the preservation and restoration of Uganda’s terrestrial ecosystems while promoting responsible tourism and international awareness for wildlife conservation.

Skills and Experiences required

No special skills are required, and full training will be provided. All you need is a curiosity for wildlife, a love for nature, and a positive team spirit. Volunteers should be in good health and able to participate in light physical activities such as walking, assisting in conservation tasks, or engaging with local communities.

Arrival & Orientation

Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel or guesthouse for an overnight stay. Take some time to relax and settle into your friendly African surroundings. Depending on your flight schedule, there are optional activities to kick off your Ugandan adventure. You can explore the Botanical Gardens near Lake Victoria, home to diverse vegetation, monkeys, and birds, and famously used as a backdrop in early Tarzan films. Alternatively, visit the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) for an up-close encounter with lions, elephants, and other incredible animals, or enjoy a short tour of Entebbe Town to get a feel for local life.

Schedule

During your volunteer stay in Uganda, each day is filled with hands-on conservation activities and unforgettable experiences. In Kampala, you can explore cultural landmarks like the Kabaka’s Palace, Old Kampala Mosque, Nakasero Market, and the man-made King’s Lake. At the Rhino Sanctuary, your program includes practical work such as rhino monitoring, fence supervising and maintenance patrols, night-time anti-poaching foot patrols, problematic plant removal, small animal rehabilitation, community education, school outreach, and general sanctuary maintenance, all guided by dedicated rangers and staff.

After your volunteering experience, you will transfer to Murchison Falls National Park, enjoying a game drive to spot elephants, giraffes, lions, buffalo, and a variety of birds, followed by a River Nile boat cruise to the base of the falls, with optional hiking to the top for breathtaking views. Accommodation is at Fort Murchison Lodge, and meals are provided. At the end of the program, you will return to Entebbe International Airport for your onward journey or flight home.
